Some of the "Greenest" things you can do are the simplest!
Lets start with the short list:
1. Walk around your house and check your hose faucets, if they are leaking or the old style crank handle have them changed.
2. Put a colored powdered cleanser in your toilet bowl, if water causes a streak or line to be broken in the cleanser your toilet is running (catch it before it runs away with your money!), most likely the flapper needs to be changed (a $3.00 part in most cases).
3. Check all faucets (including your tub&shower for drips and leaks (allowing a leak to continue will ruin the valve and cost a lot more than a repair).
4. Check the date of installation on your Water Heater if it was installed prior to 2000 you are giving away money to your utility company ( If your giving away money please send me a check!), also refer to the "Latest Advise from around the water cooler" page under the heading of Water Heaters.
These four items may seem simple but can save you thousands of dollars in the long and short run!
1. If you have an in ground sprinkler system first know where your solenoid valves are and check them for leaks, if they are more than 10 years old cut them out and put in new ones.
2. Explore your "Gray Water" options, in many cases laundry discharge or dishwasher discharge can be used for watering plants and trees.
3. Rain water can be used to power toilets or saved and redistributed as needed and when needed. Rain barrels are a start but barely, they can be cumbersome and the hose faucets often leak. A well designed system can really put your free rain water to work for you.
4. Got a fire place? Coils can be made and installed to capture the heat escaping from the smoke out your chimney in addition to the heat pouring through your vents when the heat is running.
